Anastasia Volkov is a highly capable Russian operative, accustomed to false identities, dangerous assignments, and disappearing before anyone realizes who she really is.
At home in Moscow, none of that matters.
There, she is simply the mother of Nikolai and Milena—finding forgotten school notebooks, settling arguments over chocolate, making dinner, and trying to keep promises despite a life that frequently takes her far from home.
Anastasia has learned how to keep those two worlds separate.
Until a flower appears.
Most flowers mean nothing. But Anastasia knows that certain flowers belong to a different language, reserved for assignments outside the ordinary rhythm of her work.
This time, it is a lily.
And whatever waits behind it may force Anastasia to carry one world dangerously close to the other.

Protagonist / Operative
A Russian woman in her early-to-mid thirties and a highly capable covert operative. Anastasia is composed, observant, adaptable, and accustomed to becoming whoever an assignment requires her to be. Away from her work, she is a single mother raising Nikolai and Milena in Moscow. Around her children, the severe composure others often see gives way to warmth, dry humor, patience, and the ordinary exhaustion of parenthood. The woman who can cross a hotel lobby wearing another identity is the same woman who remembers which cereal her children refuse to share. She simply knows which parts of her life must never meet.

Anastasia's Son
Anastasia's nine-year-old son and Milena's older brother. Nikolai is playful, increasingly independent, and determined to behave as though he is older than he really is. He forgets notebooks, negotiates rules, steals food before dinner, and regularly tests how far an argument can take him. Beneath the mischief, he is perceptive and quietly proud of his mother. He knows Anastasia travels frequently for work. He does not know what that work really is.

Anastasia's Daughter
Anastasia's seven-year-old daughter and Nikolai's younger sister. Milena is expressive, affectionate, curious, and naturally observant. She tells long stories about school, notices small changes adults assume children will miss, and asks questions without realizing how difficult they can sometimes be to answer. Milena knows her mother sometimes disappears for work. What matters to her is whether Anastasia comes home when she promises.

Operations Director / Anastasia's Superior
A veteran intelligence officer who oversees Anastasia's operational work. Mikhail is restrained, methodical, and rarely wastes words. He has worked with Anastasia long enough to understand both her capabilities and the limits she refuses to cross. Their relationship is professional, built on years of trust, disagreement, and the knowledge that neither of them needs everything explained aloud. He does not consider Nikolai and Milena weaknesses. They are simply part of the reality that comes with sending Anastasia into dangerous places. Even Mikhail, however, does not speak casually about assignments associated with flowers.

Field Operative / Anastasia's Teammate
An experienced Russian field operative who occasionally works alongside Anastasia on assignments requiring more than one person. Lev is pragmatic, adaptable, and considerably more conversational than Anastasia during operations. Their familiarity allows them to communicate with very little explanation while still leaving room for dry humor and disagreement. They work as equals. Neither exists to protect the other. Lev knows enough about Nikolai and Milena to understand why, for Anastasia, getting home is never a small thing.

Anastasia's Closest Friend
An African-American woman in her mid-thirties living in Moscow and one of the few people Anastasia considers a genuine friend. Warm, confident, perceptive, and outspoken, Amara belongs completely to Anastasia's civilian life. Their friendship is built around coffee, children, missed plans, late messages, bad days, laughter, and conversations that have nothing to do with espionage. Amara knows Anastasia travels frequently for work and understands that there are parts of her career she does not discuss. She has never needed every detail to remain her friend. She is close enough to Nikolai and Milena to be part of their everyday world and comfortable enough with Anastasia to tease her when almost nobody else would dare. Amara knows Anastasia as a mother, a woman, and a friend. She does not know her as an operative.
